luminous work -- laylage courie

I make things from words. Poetry, sound, theater, collage.

i make things from words.  things that intend towards light.  here is that round box from the attic.  inside, letters, photographs, unlabeled cassette tapes.  some embossed invitations to my imaginative parties, which are select and increasingly irregular.  like you, i grow old.  i keep my hands busy and my mind occupied.  if it would be better to hold something in your hands other than a machine send me a message and i will send you something real.

Here we step out of worn and weary ruts into a hint and suggestion of something high and poetic.  This is one woman’s coming-of-age quest for springs deep enough for her to bathe in.

About

This genre-bending concept album has roots in old-school radio plays, the avant-garde, art-pop, recitative, and southern folk music. It is built from my experimentally-trained voice, the voices of people I love, field recordings, beats generated from typed phrases, and one continuously shifting bass line in G.

The story? I’m sick. A Victorian travel guide directs me to a decrepit sanatorium with strange rules where I am ordered to “take the waters”. A fellow patient, a wounded explorer, reminisces about peculiar healing springs deep enough to bathe in. I take a mineral bath and the bathtub drains me onto the lake of the moon. Ladyies feast there. Deer nymphs sing.  Bones are tossed.  I meet the devil (?) down at the crossroads.  She lets loose a pack of dogs who “know other roads not mapped by sight”. I follow as Orion rises. Do I find the springs? Yes, but I must change into something wild.

Welcome to my imagination. I grow old (so do you) and this is what I have to say about it.

This album is like a play for the stage in your mind. It is one hour long.
